Book Order: What Part Goes Where?

There are 3 main parts in a book:

  1. Front matter
  2. Body
  3. Back Matter

Here’s what goes where:

Front matter:

  • Endorsements
  • Half title page
  • Blank or list of author’s other books
  • Full title page – right hand side
  • Copyright page (99.9% of the time, this will appear immediately after the full title page)
  • Dedication
  • Acknowledgements (alternate location is in back matter)
  • Table of Contents
  • Foreword (optional, written by someone other than author)
  • Preface (optional, written by author typically)

Main body:

  • Introduction
  • Parts
  • Chapters
  • Conclusion

Back matter (all optional, with the exception of the author bio, which is almost always included):

  • Afterword
  • Appendices
  • Endnotes
  • Resource List
  • Glossary
  • Bibliography
  • Author Bio
  • Author contact info
  • Index 
  • Ads
